The AGU Meetings Committee seeks an individual to fill the position of Chair, Fall Meeting.  Fall Meeting is the premier meeting in the Earth and space sciences community and attracts more than 22,000 participants.  The qualified candidate is an active scientist with breadth and/or knowledge of many AGU disciplines, excellent networking skills, and effective leadership and management skills.

This position is responsible for the 2014, 2015, and 2016 Fall Meetings.

The Chair:

  • Presides over the appointed program committee
  • Recommends, solicits, and approves Union sessions for the scientific program
  • Works with the section and focus group committee members to ensure the development of disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and trans-disciplinary sessions
  • Has authority for the arrangement of the overall scientific program
  • Serves on the AGU Meetings Committee

The Chair receives a $2,500 annual honorarium, and expenses are paid to attend program committee meetings, the Fall Meeting, and Meeting Committee meetings.

Responsibilities

  • Actively promotes the Fall Meeting to the membership and other relevant communities to ensure a broad range of topics spanning the AGU disciplines
  • Solicits Union proposals that support transdisciplinary connections as specified within the AGU Strategic Plan
  • Works with the Fall Meeting Program Committee to develop and solicit compelling session proposals to attract the best possible abstract submitters and meeting attendees
  • Acts as liaison between the Program Committee, Council, the AGU Meetings Committee, and staff when dealing with Fall Meeting relevant issues or concerns
  • Meets program objectives set by the Meetings Committee and other goals set by the Council Leadership Team, the Council, or those included in the AGU Strategic Plan
  • Accepts or rejects proposals based on scientific merit and within the Fall Meeting guidelines and parameters
  • Encourages program ideas to maintain and enhance the experience of meeting participants at the Fall Meeting.
